Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction (ED): What You Need to Know

August 11, 2021 |

It may feel like a taboo topic, but erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common sexual health issues out there.

Affected men are unable to build or maintain a sufficient erection over a long period of time — despite their sexual arousal. So it’s no surprise that ED can significantly reduce the quality of life and confidence of men and their partners.

When a health condition is affecting your body, mind, and lifestyle, then it’s time to take action. Shockwave therapy in particular is a fantastic treatment option for ED, so let’s bring you up to speed.

What is shockwave therapy for ED and how does it work?

Shockwave therapy has emerged over the last decade as an alternative, non-invasive treatment for ED. It works by using high-energy sound waves that speed up tissue repair and growth — patients with broken bones, injured ligaments, and open wounds have all used shockwave therapy to expedite their recovery.

Since erections rely on healthy blood flow to the penile tissue, shockwave therapy is an effective way of repairing and strengthening blood vessels in the penis and improving the overall blood flow. And even though shockwave therapy hasn’t been FDA approved yet, there are several studies that have showed encouraging results.

Shockwave therapy may sound like it is a scary treatment, but there’s little to no discomfort associated with the process. There’s no need for any numbing medication or post-procedure pain medication.

This is how shockwave therapy works for ED:

  1. High frequency, low-intensity shockwaves are sent to the penile tissue.
  2. The body senses the shockwaves to the tissue and triggers the body’s repair response.
  3. This allows the body to start repairing damaged blood vessels, stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, and break down micro-plaques (which reduce blood flow) in the existing vessels.

For best results, patients must undergo the procedure once or twice a week for two to three months.

Shockwave therapy at Limitless Male Health Clinic

LimitlessPulse™ Focused Wave Therapy is different from other ED therapies, like GainsWave, for one simple reason. We focus on the root causes of ED: reduced blood flow to the penis.

Our innovative and advanced ‘focused shockwave’ performs a deep penetration of penile tissue — up to 3x deeper than ‘radial’ methods — helping restore and rebuild blood vessels in the penis. The deeper the shockwaves reach, the better your blood flow will be — creating stronger, longer-lasting erections and improving not only your sex life but your relationships and confidence as well.

The benefits of shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunctions

One of the great things about shockwave therapy is that’s a non-invasive procedure — and not a drug. Shockwave therapy is a side-effect-free, natural, and long-lasting erectile dysfunction treatment method.

That means almost anyone can receive this treatment and improve the quality of their erection. Patients across a broad age spectrum are using shockwave therapy to prevent ED and increase erection quality. It can also help men who frequently lose, or struggle to achieve, erections.

Shockwave therapy has applications outside of ED too.

In addition to ED, shockwave therapy can be used to treat Peyronie’s disease — an abnormal curvature of the penile tissue. This is usually due to a plaque formation caused by trauma, but Peyronie’s disease can come on without reason as well.

Here, shockwave therapy is used to break down the plaque, returning normal function to the penis and reducing discomfort when achieving an erection.

And you don’t need a ‘condition’ to have shockwave therapy either. Otherwise healthy individuals can undergo the process to get a stiffer and/or thicker penis.

How do I know if shockwave therapy is right for me?

Shockwave therapy could be right for you if:

  • You suffer from erectile dysfunctions (for any number of reasons, from trauma and post-surgery effects to obesity, medication, high blood pressure, and more)
  • You’d like to try alternative ways to treat ED
  • You suffer from Peyronie’s disease and would like to improve your health.
  • You’d like to heave a healthier and thicker penis.

What does a shockwave therapy treatment look (and feel) like?

Shockwave treatment at Limitless Male Medical Clinic is painless and uncomplicated.

Most patients are in the clinic for about 30 minutes from the time they walk in the door until the time they leave.

First, you’ll be taken to our procedure room by a nurse, and a set of vital signs will be recorded (weight, blood pressure, pulse rate). The nursing staff will then give you instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, before leaving you to get ready. After that, the procedure will begin.

During the treatment, shockwaves will be applied to areas around the base of the penis and to the penile shaft itself. The treatment itself lasts about 15-20 minutes with minimal discomfort.

After your treatment, you will be allowed to return to your daily routine as normal — there are no restrictions whatsoever. If you do have some minor soreness, we’d recommend taking some Tylenol (rather than ibuprofen or naproxen). But rarely do patients require any pain killers.

How often you come back for subsequent treatments will depend on your personal therapy plan. During your initial consultation, your dedicated healthcare provider will use your ED history to determine your therapy plan. The treatment protocol is generally 1-2 pulse sessions per week for 6 weeks, depending on the severity of your ED.

After 2-3 sessions, patients often report improved morning stiffness — that’s the treatment starting to work.

I’d like to try shockwave therapy for my ED — what’s next?

Men tend to feel guilty and ashamed about their ED; slinking off to the pharmacy in search of a quick fix or magic cure. But in truth, getting and maintaining an erection is about much more than sex — where the taboo typically comes from.

Treating ED is about healthy blood flow and building your self-confidence. If you have a partner, it’s also about creating intimacy and enjoying a sex life together. That’s why ED and shockwave treatment isn’t something you should have to tackle on your own — no matter who you talk to about it.

Practical, informative conversations about your preferred treatment approach are what we specialize in at Limitless Male Health Clinic. So as soon as you’re ready to have the conversation, get in touch for a free consultation.
